Comfrey- Healing Muscular Pain

Comfrey is a fast-growing, leafy perennial grown throught the world. It’s healing right in it’s name. Comfrey’s botanical name is Symphytum Officianale (don’t ask me to pronounce it lol) The latin name is from the greek word “ sumphis” meaning “ to grow bones together.” It is known to be an aid to healing bones, muscles, and pain in general.

Comfrey is one of the most medicinal powerful plants in the game. As a massage therapist, I am ALWAYS looking for more ways to help heal the body.

The chemicals in this wild plant have wound healing effects and reduce inflammation when applied to the skin. It helps moon cycle cramps, cough & chest pain, varicose veins, back pain, arthritis, overworked muscles, fractures, bruises… and the list goes on and on. How cool right? Who would have thought..a little shrub holds so much medicinal value?

NOTE: Although Comfrey is highly effective externally (salves, poultice, oils, etc.) studies show taking interally over time may potentially be toxic to liver- containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

There are many ways to use Comfrey. I have used it as a poultice, soaking a towel in steamed leaves, and then gently wrapped on the area. I’ve also used in oil infusions as a massage oil. In fact, the main herb in Come Alive’s Mountain Muscle Mend is yep, Comfrey!

Mountain Muscle Mend

Muscle Mend is for sore, tired, overworked muscles. Because it's a salve, it's thicker than an oil so a little bit goes a long way. It's intended to be a massage cream to work out achy areas of the body. It’s like icy hot, without the hot burning feeling! (I’ve noticed there are so many people who don’t like the menthol feeling.) It is infused with peppermint leaf, so you are getting the medicinal love but without the burning feeling that you know of if you’ve ever used peppermint essential oil.

Earth gives us so many healing plants and it is time to connect and utilize it’s gifts. :)
